| When most people think of teenagers, they think of sports, shopping malls, and a busy phone line. While these things are true of most teenagers, the teens who make up the St. George Youth City Council can also be associated with community service and a sense of civic duty.
The St. George Youth City Council was formed in 1990 as a way to:
- Encourage and promote the education of youth regarding civic government.
- Encourage youth input and participation
- Assist city leaders.
- Conduct surveys, workshops, and special events.
- Serve as youth ambassadors for the City of St. George.
The Youth Council meets each Wednesday, with the exception of the months of June through July and holidays. Members are chosen from youth in the 8th through 12th grades through an application and interview process in January.
Youth Council members are expected to be good students and good citizens. As the City's youth ambassadors, they are expected to adhere to a Code of Conduct. This includes good school attendance. Smoking, drinking, drug use or fighting are grounds for censure or even dismissal from membership.
"I have been working with the Youth Council since August of 1995," said Richard Isom, Youth City Council advisor. "These are exceptionally bright, energetic and enthusiastic young people who want to make a difference in their community. And given the opportunity they will."
